Default Working in St.Barths (Eu-citizen)

Hey!

I have been thinking about going to St.Barths to work/live there for 6-7 weeks from January to February 2012.

Here is my situation:I have to be back in Austria beginning of March for my last 4 months, then I get my master's degree.

I have one contact in St.Barths but she says that at the moment it is difficult to get a job there. I have a Bachelor's degree in tourism so working in a hotel is an option. Nevertheless I would prefer a job outdoors, even when it is something extremely simple like renting boots, security, barkeeper, whatever.

I dont want to get reach, my goal is to break even, but I am also ready to pay some extra. I just want to get my ass in the Caribbean and out of Vienna.

Major concerns and costs:~1000 € flight
extremely high costs for appartments, I would need a room in advance before leaving Austria, otherwise I could get costly. Costs of living are extremely high as well.

Another problem is the limited time frame of 6-7 months. I am an EU citizen so I can stay and work there as long as I want, nevertheless without personal connections it will be hard to find somebody who hires me for that time.

I am also a certified practitioner of NLP and will become a coach in a few years. So I might offer my services there and gather some experience. What do you think?

I also work as a model in Austria, but I dont think I can work as a model over there. Only as a toy boy for the old and rich ladies

Questions:
Do you guys have any experience with St.Barths? I highly appreciate every kind of information.
How shall I proceed? Recommendations?
What do you think about the crazy idea of just booking the flight without having anything arranged in advance? That might be deadly alternative concerning the fact that it is a luxury island.

Thoughts:I might go back in July 2012 after I have graduated to work there for a year or more. So I could see the 6 weeks in january and february as an investment (building a network,...)

i have never been to St barts.

BUT I do have an idea for you if you do your NLP training.

I have a friend who was from Germany and wanted to go to Australia for a while, and wanted a cool job.

He came up with an idea for a 1 day workshop teaching skills to companies (similar to NLP)

He went on linked-in and searched for companies in the area where he was staying. Especially if those companies could benefit from his one day training.

He took the first 100 results from linked-in, googled the people and found their email address. He sent them all a customized e-mail saying what he would do.

out of the 100 he got about 8 or 9 gigs, and that earned enough money to pay for most of the trip.

So, maybe that gives you an idea? perhaps you have some skills you could offer in st barts?

Thx for the post.
I definitely have some skills, credibility is another issue.

I postponed the St. Barts experience to August 2012, it is too difficult to get a job there for only 6 weeks. I need to be more flexible time-wise.

St Barth is probably one of the most expensive island in the caribbean, especially for housing.

Modeling won't do, there is no agency down there, no jobs. Most of the models who do shooting in St Barth are hired in Europe and then fly over there for the shooting/filming.

Have you thought of trying another cheaper island first ? That will make the trip easier to fund.

I am pretty focused now on St.Barts

I changed my plans anyway for now. I will do a 4-7 week trip through California, for which I might start a thread soon...
