Was thinking of purchasing a domain name for a site I want to work on...
Thing is; I counted the letters and it totals 14 characters. It consists of two words put together and one of them is the word "clever"... Is that a bit too complicated for a domain? I have not purchased it yet, so, I can't write the full name here ![]() Should I simplify? Does it matter that much? Are people not good enough at spelling mid-tier (difficulty) words in English, so-much-so, that I should think of something more simple? Thanks! |

It depends on the name if its too long. Generally the more catchy the better. prosoundeffects.com hase 15 letters, but its fairly easy to remember so that its no problem.
For the spelling you can always register other domains with the possible errors and then redirect. For example: ebya.com instead of ebay.com |

By the way; noticed you are in Koeln...I am down in Nuernberg (getting a Master's degree)...good to see a German on the board here . I am from the US though but I love it here! The Franconians are quite..."special" and the dialect is a bit hard for me as a high-level beginner (A2 verge of B1 if you are familiar with that system) but I am getting along just fine!I know 4hww has a German-language version but I was not sure how popular it was here! |

First of all, subscribe to a feed like Techbargains.com. In the last 45 days, Go Daddy has had at least two offers where domain names were less than $1.50 USD. Drop the dollar or two, so you can let us know the domain name and give you outsider perspectives if it's memorable enough.
Secondly, I think whether a person can remember the domain name is much more important than the exact number of letters in it. However, it's not only remembering it but also being able to spell it correctly. If you still can't tell us what it is, test some of you friends to see if they can remember it "manually." If they can, it MAY be good. If they CAN'T, it's probably bad. All in all, registration is cheap. If you think it's a good name, go ahead and snap it up (using a coupon code). If it proves to suck, get rid of it by not renewing it. |

Don't overthink the domain name- it's probably one of the least important pieces of the puzzle. Worry about getting your product up and running and available and you can always change the domain name later.

Yeah, I didn't think so...I just read a lot of online news and sometimes I read the comments and I realize how atrocious some people's spelling can be! My concern was more about the word "clever"; although, when you think about it...there are not a lot of possibilities when spelling it!
As for the rest; of course the domain name is the first step but its also an important part (as Tim covered this topic in the 1st ed. of 4HWW but to find something simple and under 7 characters is nearly impossible these days and I do not want to pull out the Swahili dictionary to find something "interesting") |
