Default Resell first, or new product line?

For one of our Muses, we're considering a market that has pre-established products, similar to the one we're considering on creating ourselves.

Do any of you have experience with reselling (in a manner that is better, more accessible or more professional than the competition) a product and THEN releasing your own line of products? Or vice versa?

I'm just wondering, if we potentially have a good original product of a similar kind, would we be killing some potential profit by reselling first? Or would it be better to resell as a 'test' to see how well we do in that market?

Speaking as someone who has absolutely no experience in this area, I would go with selling the other item first. Particularly if you haven't fully developed your product already.

This will give you time to get all your SEO optimization and keyword research tested before moving on to your own product. Plus, maybe you'll find that the product isn't in as much demand as you had expected - you'll save yourself some good money finding this out ahead of time.

I'll be interested to see what the experienced folks have to say.
