Default Muse testing your niche market?

Okay, here's something I find confusing. Tim recommends finding magazines that apply to your niche market for eventual ads. Got it. But prior to that, I do testing via Google Adwords. How do I get my niche market to my test ads? I am looking to take a relatively common product (a wallet) and sell it to a niche market (women in the military) based on the design. I haven't started the process of investigating good search terms for PPC, but I'm almost wondering if I wouldn't be better off putting a small ad in one of my niche magazines, where I think advertising would be relatively inexpensive.

Am I making this too hard? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Adwords can tell you how many people saw your ads (exactly), how much it costs to reach them, what phrases they searched for to see your ad (ie what they were thinking / looking for). A print ad in a local magazine doesn't give any of this, it usually costs far more and takes much longer.

With adwords, you can also lower your cost per sale by adding more, less common / longer searchphrases. Once you know what wording sells from Adwords you can use it in a print ad with almost guaranteed results. I almost guarantee that if you just run up an ad with the wording you think will work... it wont! (been there. Done that! )

Part of the value of adwords is that it gives you data to know your market and what sells better. The other advantage is that it teaches you nearly instantly.
