Recently implemented tapefailure monitoring for one of my test sites. Read:
http://www.tapefailure.com/ For $8 month you can can gain a LOT of insight on what is working and what is not on your test site. Find out what attracts someone the most about your offer by splitting the content across several pages and providing a nice clean menu on the top and left with the different features and focus. See http://www.tapefailure.com/overview and check out the demos. Note: Other than being a fan of the technology I have no relationship with tapefailure. |

People interested in this should also look into google analytics. Bascially the same thing with different presentation format, and free. Though I'd be curious to see a sample and how informative it is compared to just information.

Most heatmap systems and click measurement systems to not show you how a visitor actually moves through the site - only their actual click. Buy viewing over time its like sitting behind a visitor while they surf. I have found that this system provides a LOT of interesting feedback and insight - especially for one/two page sites where google does not measure how far someone scrolls down the page to the call to action - tapefailure does.

Do you know of any videos showing exactly what a tape playback looks like. That sounds interesting. I'm not sure how they monitor where a person's mouse is or how far they scroll down a page... I'd be interested in that!

They don't have any videos at moment -
Everything that happens on the screen - scrolling, form entry, etc is an "observable event" via javascript. These events are passed back in near real time back to the server using something called ajax. |

Wow, I'm currently working a web design job as a flash/flex developer. I never even though about recording the users mouse movements. It really wouldn't be hard at all. I don't know why I never thought of that, and as I'm developing my muse site in flex I could make my own... heh that could potentially be another muse a flash based version of that tape idea... heh thanks!
