Default Website Creation

Hello All, I am ready to put my muse online. I have no experience with website building but I'm very good with publisher and the like. I decided to use GoDaddy because of their Website Tonite program. They have over 800 templates and it seemed at the time like a good place to start for a website novice like myself. Well what a mistake that was. While GoDaddy is extremely "buyer friendly", it is one of the most user unfriendly programs I have ever used. I thought I could learn by doing. I contacted customer support when I was having countless problems. I was advised that to start over I would have to cancel my website tonight and buy it again!!!! Well, let me get to the point. I am ready to just kiss off the GoDaddy cost and chalk it up to experience. Now I am looking for the easiest way (in laymans terms please) for a first timer to get a basic sales letter type website up and running. I enjoy learning and prefer to do this on my own if possible, but I am not looking to go to school to learn html etc. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, you can learn HTML (The programming language of websites - not that hard).

You can also use a WYSIWYG editor (What you see is what you get). I'm sure there are plenty of free ones out there.

Wordpress and paypal... two of the easiest.

I atually find google checkout easier than paypal, so you can try that.

HTML knowledge is not even necessary for wordpress. You will just need to know how to upload it to your server, which they have tons of tutorials on how to do it.

Wordpress is one of the easiest but it doesn't fit every muse or project. A basic page can be done with some very simple HTML (HTML isn't a programming language it is a markup language). Basicly anyone can learn and use HTML really quickly, for example I have taught my 8 year old nephew to write basic HTML pages. Really to learn enough to do landing pages and such should only take you an hour or two.

Godaddy is great for hosting and ok for domains, both their virtual dedicated and shared servers do just fine, however any other services and their customer support suck and should be avoided.

My suggestion is try Wordpress 1st, if it doesn't fit then try some HTML.

If you want to make money, focus on making money. If you want to do HTML programming and learn web design, go to design school. They really aren't compatible, and you will end up with junk (and high blood pressure) doing it yourself.

Spend $100 with Elance and have it done properly. If you have a remotely marketable product, that investment will pay for itself thousands of times over.

I disagree to an extent, you will only end up with junk if that is your mindset and if an 8 year old can do HTML you really do not need any school for it. Most ppl on Elance didn't go to school for it either. Higher education is not what makes a skill nor do some skills take much time to learn. You need to balance it, is it worth it to you to learn in the long run, is it something you would find benificial, if so learn it, if not don't but when starting a muse things like WP are worth a shot.

Agreed.

They still expect you to supply the sales copy, so they basically create some very simplistic html stuff.

<HTML>
<HeaD>
<TITLE>MUSE NAME</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<CENTER>
<TABLE WIDTH=600 BGCOLOR=black>
<TR BGCOLOR=white>
<TD>
<CENTER><h1><FONT COLOR=red>BIG BOLD OPENER</FONT></H1>
<P>
<TABLE WIDTH=500><TR><TD>
OPENING PARAGRAPH
</tD>
</TR>
</TABLE>

<P>
What great features do I get?
<UL>
<LI>Item 1
<LI>Item 2
<LI>Item 3
</UL>
<P>
<TABLE WIDTH=400 COLOR=lightblue><TR><TD>TESTIMONIAL ONE</TD></TR></TABLE>
<P>
<TABLE WIDTH=400 COLOR=lightblue><TR><TD>TESTIMONIAL TWO</TD></TR></TABLE>
<P>
<A HREF=order.html><IMG SRC="sexy-order-button.jpg"></a>

</TD>
</TR>
</TABLE>
</CENTER>
</BODY>
</HTML>

I imagine most of them just have a template and fill in the blanks, and change a few colors around.

Completely agree - wrt. freelance HTMLers, unless you're looking for advanced backend programming i.e. web development, the phrase "Money for old rope" springs to mind.

I agree with Kam, only do what you are good at. For most people working on websites is a total waste of time. Also, working with cheap people can be a waste of time and money.

I found learning drupal (cms for websites like wordpress and joomla) very usefull and I can do it quite well.

most people that can do html quite well still end up making garbage websites because of poor design skills.
