I'm working on a small niche site and plan to use Google Adsense AND a few specialized ads.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of ad rates? Or where to start? I don't want to charge too much or too little, and I know a lot depends on how many visitors I get.

But what's the formula and where to start?

I don't think there is a formula for Adsense.

While AdSense can be very expensive, they do have tools to track sales and leads generated from their clicks. You can spend as much or as little as you want on ads depending on how much volume and quality you want.

I use the AdSense Content network, because it's much cheaper than for google search. I pay about $0.02 - $0.03 / click. The quality of these clicks are about what I get from other sources. I've heard of others getting $0.01.

One VERY VERY important thing you should know about adsense: The quality of your landing page and site help DETERMINE how much you're going to pay. A better site will yield lower rates. (google "Adsense quality score" for more info)

For other advertisements, start small with places you know. Test everything so know you you're getting your money's worth.

I think you're confusing AdWords and AdSense.

AdWords is the PPC engine where you bid for keywords to get clicks to your site.

AdSense is the ad serving technology that pays you a % of each click yur visitors generate.

DOH! yes, replace adsense with adwords in my post.

Yeah, my post would have been perfect if you were looking to "BUY" ads. (which, you should)

With selling adsense ads, you don't don't get to choose a rate. You see what you can get. From there, you'll have a baseline rate for your site. Unless you're really big, or really local, I wouldn't bother selling your own ads.
