Hello 4HWW'ers

In the book, Timothy talks about how traveling can be less expensive than many people think. Two of those "people" are my parents.

I would really like to go on a vacation to a place that is not your standard American vacation (New York, Yellow Stone, Disneyland, Hawaii etc..). Not because I don't enjoy those places, but because I would like to experience some different culture.

Would it be realistic to go on a two week vacation with my two parents and little sister for under $2,000? Including transportation, housing, and food?

If there is a "yes" answer to the above question, where would be a place to go? Europe, South America, Canada or Mexico?

Thank you very much,
Benji

I think that a really good holliday depends on the experiences, not the whereabouts. So if you get in the car and drive to a place where you can create the shared experiences that will be talked about for years it'll be easy...

As long as you do not get uncomfortable for long it should be a great joy!

Go to Burning Man. It will be the best vacation you can imagine.

It might be tough to go anywhere except where you can drive or take a bus to. Flights are typically the most expensive parts of travel, and for only two weeks it may not be worth it. I'd recommend hopping in a car and going as far south as your time allots. You can get to great cheap places in Mexico and stay on the beach and have a good time for that amount (stay away from the bigger cities though- they're more expensive). If you can, possibly cut through to central America, you can find some fun there as well.

I stayed in some nice palapas (kind of like hotel huts) on the beach in San Felipe, Mexico for awhile. You can go fishing, eat at some local restaurants for cheap, enjoy the beach, etc (they also cater a bit to foreigners, as they have bananaboats and jet skis you may be able to rent). San Felipe has been my favorite spot in Mexico thus far.

Just make sure wherever you go that you research where you're going beforehand. Hotels may not be vacant, you may overpay, etc.
