you can put Google ads up on your site, and then you get a percentage of the profits for every click. You can also become an affiliate of an affiliate marketer and be compensated similarly (or per sale, or whatever that particular marketer offers).
People usually do not browse the net in order to find sites to advertise on. So yes, you have to find potential advertisers. To win them, have a proposal ready they only need to say "Yes!" to.

You need to show that you are getting the visitors and visitors from the niche you want the advertisers from.
Remember though that some advertising can put your visitors off so you need to work out what you will advertise and where.

Many sites put up banner ads on there own websites to indicate that they are offering advertising. You may want to try that.

Or you can add an "advertise" or "sponsor" page on your website, and on this page you explain everything to a potential buyer : what are your ad spaces, how much traffic you are getting, etc... and eventually your prices and a paypal button, so that it's all automated !
Then off course, you need to attract the attention of people to your website so that potential advertisers might think "it would be cool to place and ad there".

This is difficult to do, and takes plenty of time. First off, your site has to have high PageRank and high Traffic for other companies to even think about wanting to advertise on your site. If they don't think they'll get the click throughs, you won't be able to convince them to buy ads.
I'd suggest finding companies to put on your site via affiliate networks like Pepperjam. They have thousands of companies and products to choose from to advertise on your site. Plus, if someone clicks on the ad you put there and buys something on their website - you get a cut.
The difference is these companies won't be paying you for the ads. Basically, you're advertising for them, and get a cut of whatever customers spend there. In many cases, even if a customer has clicked on the ad 2 months previous before they buy something from that company, you'll still get a cut because of the "cookies" saved on their machines.

Cheers and good luck!
