Hey guys,

My muse (a cellphone case that blocks radiation, thus decreasing cancer chances and so forth) already exists. It is called a pong case and has been featured in some big magazines, such as Wired. The thing is, it is extremely expensive ($60) and not marketed well at all. I chanced upon it today deep down in search results, and not even for a good keyword. My point is, I could probably outrank them using SEO and such, but don't know if it's worth it since they are a very legit company with some good press. Thoughts?

What if you cannot find another source for the product and do not wish to go through the design process. Does being a licensee make as much sense? I guess it all depends on the return.

you may not be able to beat them on SEO if they have really good press releases with really authoritative sites linking back to them. Also Google favors branded sites over generic ones. So it my be a up hill struggle especially since they most likely targeted the "best" converting keywords.

You stand a great chance of crushing them on SEO. Just get out there and do it. You never need to be the first or only one to market. In fact that is often a route to failure. Just think MacDonald's. They sure didn't invent the burger or fries. Domino's didn't invent pizza, yet they deliver more pizza around the world then anyone else.

You should hope there are even more people doing what you want to do. 100% of a tiny unproven market is a lot worse than 10% of a proven market.

Is Pong a TMed phrase or is it a generic word for the case in general?

If it is generic and used by everyone in the industry, I would buy the domain name PongCases.com immediately as a part of your SEO plans. Google does lend value to exact matches to URL in SE placement. There should also be some direct navigation traffic to that domain that develops in the future as the term "pong case" becomes recognized more in the mainstream.

Cheers!

Wineguy is right exact domains can save you 75% time and budget in your SEO. But more than likely you will have to purchase it since all the good 2 word and 3 word phrases seem to be taken.

But again you can't tell how good a competitor is at seo until you look at their backlinks and their anchor text. Also how many links do they have pointing back to their pages?
