I have built a social network that I want to monetize. However, I am all over the place getting up to speed with various tactics for how to do so.
Can someone recommend a E-book or something with the ins and outs of membership sites?
I am thinking of a Step training program for how to setup your own circle of influence, so to speak. That is not really it, but the mechanism works the same.
This is where is am stuck?
Objective: Move the nation and make a decent living!
Options:
1. the membership is free, unless you want to join or form a group
2. both memberships are free unless you want specific training on how to set up your group.
3. And if the second option is chosen, then should it be a one time fee or MRR such as 9.95 or 19.95 a month.
The value proposition is in the groups and the specialized content for the paying members of that particular group.

I don't think you can effectively poll us in an appropriate way when we're not fully aware of your product nor the market nor the information surrounding any of this. It's pretty much gotta be your call. Although I would recommend to not break membership up into payments (unless it's a fixed recurring rate).

It is impossible to answer your question, as you are too vague... if this is a membership for students lacking money, then 9.95 monthly is already a lot. If this is a website for CEO of FOrtune 50 companies, then 99.5 monthly might be even more...
Yaro Starak's work is quite good (membership mastermind plan or something like that).

You need to check out a few other membership sites. www.membergate.com has a bit list of membership sites and you can check out what they charge.
There is no way you will know what to charge. Some are $9.97 per month and some have a years membership only for $97. Some renew and others don't.
You can choose the high volume and low price model or vice versa. With mine at www.howtonetwork.net I started off at $9.97 per month but found that I couldn't grow it and reinvest at that level. Also, you get a lot of high maintenance customers who begrudge paying that even.
I tested a joining fee of $27 then $9.97 per month which gave me a big jump in profits. now I set 3 levels for people to choose. Google 'decoy marketing' to reasearch that.
For my internet marketing membership site I want serious people who want to learn all about it and create products so that is $97. Even with only 100 members at that level you are making very good money.
That site is a www.internet-rich.com
Another site which helps people who run membership sites is membershipsiteowner.com run my membership site guru Tim Kerber.
Hope that helps.

I came up with the idea after attending a 2012 meeting organized by some people on meetup.com website. After talking with and getting to know these strangers who wanted to do something, but not knowing what. I had an epiphany of sorts. What facebook was missing for me was context. ( read this article http://http://www.sramanamitra.com/2007/02/14/web-30-4c-p-vs/) I was relieved to read I was on the right track. Most of my friends are old ones from high school and do not reflect my current interests. My current context is entrepreneurship, green tech, political activism. I only care to associate with people that watch the news once a week and read at least one book a year about something important to the rest of humanity.
It started out in my mind as a survival thing then evolved into a group action thing. My belief is thus, I do not know how the changes that are taking place will affect the future, but I do know one thing, the current way of thinking is not the way.
So, I took all of my survival research and put it into a 12 step learning format with howto's for recruiting, what to say and do at meetings in your home or Starbucks. I even have a meal plan for a family of 4 for one month at less than $150.00. All of these things I have done my self and can be done by anyone.
I want people to get together and do something good. You can use my methods and put together a small team to effect positive change in your community. What if 12 people drove down to New Orleans and Saved a dozen birds soaked in oil. The government has proved itself impotent for the last time! My survival group has evolved into something more than it was intended. We have group fitness, yoga, meditations, 3 people bought real estate together, etc. The relationships are good and long lasting. It could happen for everyone. The bad people in the world that profit from the status-quo cannot succeed if we get to know each other again.
So my value proposition is you have to pay for the training program and to form a group. As well as each team leaders members join at 50% rate? If you want to form other groups outside of your own then you get the 1st month up to 12 people, for an unlimited amount of groups. (What ever that rate is?). Or something like that.
I had an idea, How can I turn my members into employees? So,now I am thinking about a hybrid affiliate program so to speak. Or rather, I think it might be more profitable if you actually are a member and have your own group.
My platform is Elgg Open source social networking. It runs on the LAMP stack. And works with most hosting companies. I have a reseller account, so I can host my own sites for the same price.

I didn't really understand the value or product you are offering to your client ? what is your market ? your product ? how does it change people's life ?

You still haven't explained the value proposition. I have a family of four, and each of us use facebook daily. It hasn't cost us a dime. We each have gmail accounts. They are free. We use google applications for free.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of free services in the cloud now, so you have to offer a lot in order to charge money now. And for your poll to collect valid data, one of the choices should be "free".

Unfortunately, I cannot go into more detail. Two developers have stolen my idea already. I put the site out for coding with developers. Then, I never heard back from them and I never even blinked at the price. A month ago I get an email from one of them trying to market the site. They must have forgotten who I was. Then I see what seems like a questions relating to my central idea on another forum. I sent him a quick question and it was the same email address that I sent my bid too.
I have links to books and other items that I have used in my travels so to speak. That is how I plan to make money. This is only a testing muse even though I am passionate about it. I am a brick and mortar guy. I have made money on the internet but not serious money. So I am going after the Big 3 on my third site. Once I finish with this one it will give me the money to scale up. Then, in phase two, I will scale up one last time. All under different brands but nevertheless a serious learning curve.
And yes Everything is Free with only my advertising. Which is small and tastefully placed. A minimalist approach!
