Hi,

I'm an IT proffesional living in Australia. I read 4hww over two years ago and I'm frustrated with not being able to negotiate remote work since that time. I've changed my career to become a Buiness Intelligence Developer and one of the main reasons is because this is a role which is very amenable to remote work. However I'm finding it hard to find telecommuting roles over here.

From speaking to people in the industry, it seems that it is more culturally accepted to do telework and remote work in the UK and USA. In Australia it seems to be alot less common.
Given It's actually quite easy for me to get a work visa for the states I'm thinking about going over to search for telecommute jobs over there.

I've already had some interest from US recruiters and agencies and I haven't left the country yet.

My end goal is to take a role in the USA which allows me to
a: Finish paying off my debts.
b: I can turn into a telecommuting role.
c: Work and live Overseas (Probably New York or San Francisco)
d: Get away from the 'noise' of my life in Australia and focus on what I really want (location independant income).

Any thoughts or advice on doing this?
Given that I'm prepared to move O/S to find a telecommuting role, does anyone have any advice about how to do this?

#Update#

I heard things are still recovering in America and I wanted to guage the market for my skills.

I posted my CV on a technology recruitment site (dice.com) and applied for a couple of jobs. I listed a local New York number I purchased using skype as my contact number. This makes it easier for recruiters\HR to contact me, and it gives the impression I'm already in New York. (When I'm asked my current location I disclose that I'm living in Melbourne, Australia).

I've had two calls and an email or two already. Looks like there's market interest in what I do so I guess the next thing is to head on over.

How does this relate to 4HWW?
I still have some debts to pay off so can't afford to be out of work, but why wait until i've climbed out of debt to explore a new country?
Earning the US$ will help me pay off my debts quicker and I'll get to live in one of the most vibrant cities on earth.

The next step after this is to find a telecommuting role and then move to south america\mexico and earn greenbacks whilst paying in pesos.

Then I'll look to establish my muse.

Any advice\comments on this plan? Tips on living in New York?

I have not seen a more incompatible set of goals ever. Doesn't it seem a bit odd to you to move to be able to telecommute?

I moved back and forth from the US to Japan a few times, and recently from Japan to Singapore, and I can tell you that it is not cheap. Moving is expensive as hell, and moving internationally is even more so.

I am not sure what kind of 'noise' you are referring to in Australia, but dude, come on... NY or SF? Why not add Tokyo to the list for the trifecta of noisy and expensive cities.

If Melbourne is too noisy for you, and you can't seem to find what you are looking for there, you will not find it elsewhere, because the crappy thing about moving is that you always bring yourself along. the best thing you can do is to take a look at Tim's book again and read the sections about LD. Go out and buy Vagabonding, by Rolf Potts, and download/buy some Kiyosaki products that work on reducing debt.

Start living in the present. AZ is a play ground compared to NY. Spend a weekend on a catamaran sailing the Great Barrier Reef. Get out of the city. Unless you start to deal with the reasons why you are unsatisfied with Melbourne, those same things will crop up in any city you move to.

Man, they really did upgrade the Tempe Town Lake here, didn't they? I know Arizonans (AZ) like their boats, but I haven't seen a cat here yet. :)
