In order to qualify a customer as a sale, is it necessary to ask for credit card details?
I ask this because at the moment, I have the sales letter for the landing page, which leads interested users to a second page where the price is revealed and their personal details are asked (name, phone, email). From here, the third page shows the back-order message.
I am wondering if it's important to ask the customer to enter credit card info, therefore ensuring that they are genuine sales.

Thank you for any help :)

Hi, Smiley. I am in the same phase of testing as you are. I don't think it is good to ask for credit card info right now - security problems and stuff that is not worth messing with at this point, until you see if the tests work out well. What I did was tried to collect as much info other than that as I could, thinking that if they are filling out all this, plus they know the price, they are probably pretty serious. I asked for name, email, asked them to create a username and password (I said they would need that to download their ebook later, but really I was just trying to pad out the page and make it look official) and then I asked how they would like to pay. I gave them a dropdown menu of Visa, MC, Amex, and Disc. Then, after all that, I put a continue button (which lead to the backorder page.) I figured if they were still with me at this point, they were getting ready to put in their CC number, and I feel pretty confident that they could be a customer. I hope that idea helps!

Nice one Sunshine! Your strategy does warrant it to be tested. Thanks for that :)

It is not important, in fact it is fraud and will get your payment account closed, and possibly land you in jail. Testing is not that important. Just do what the book tells you and go to a page like the one I have set up in place of a payment page. Feel free to take it word for word if you want.
