View Full Version : Big luggage for my RTW? Cheap Logistics?

Dear all,

Hypothetical question: let's say I'm all packed for my RTW, I have a hiker's backpack and a carry-on, with the necessities for an undefinite stay (with laundry days).

What if I were an avid golfer or needed something else that is heavy/bulky enough to not be worth hauling around everywhere.

I immediately thought of setting up an account with a logistics company (DHL, UPS, Fedex, TNT, Kintetsu, Panalpina, whichever) so that whenever I get the need for the stuff in my large crate, I would jsut have it shipped from the previous location to my current one. After use it would stay at a new-found friend, until it was picked up again, whenever I feel the need for it.

Any ideas on cheap logistics providers? Any fatal flaws to my plan?

I know for my scuba diving gear, which is just as big and bulky as golf, I can check it in as "sports equipment" on most airlines. I usually pay $15 for it.

The downside is that is really is a pain in the ass to lug it around. When I'm here on the islands using it daily it's fine, but if I decide to go somewhere for a few weeks on a holiday and it's a place that I don't go diving, it is very annoying and hard to carry around.

I suggest, unless you are going to use it 3x a week or more, every week, do not bring it. Just rent it there.

Yep. that is my advice as well. Renting it will be much less of a burden compared to lugging heavy stuff around. I finally quit buying snow skis for that reason, and never regretted it.

Thanks guys, I was afraid you were gonna say that. :p

Nevertheless, you're probably right. Kama, I already agree with you about the skis, that's the best way to have always up-to-date gear.

Golf clubs are a bit more personal, and really affect the game a lot more though... Oh well, at least I'll always have a good excuse handy: " I would've nailed this round if I only had my own clubs instead of these lousy rentals"
