www.tailgatefootballgame.com has been running for 2 months. Adwords working great but the sales are not keeping up with adword costs. Is the site the problem or the product?

Mostly a website problem I think. Although from your website I cannot actually work out how the game is played.

I found the site very slow to load (particularly for the slideshow banner thing at the top). The laborious checker wipe on the animation makes it seem old fashioned and boring.

I also feel the home page isn't really doing it's job of telling you the benefits and then making it easy to purchase.

Take a look at:

http://www.mint.com/

OK I know it's a different kind of product but the principle is the same.

Each part of the banner tells you about a benefit/deals with a concern. The constant prominent feature of the banner is the sign up now (or in your case it should be something like - buy it now). Instead you currently have the rather dully worded "purchase" buried at the top of the screen - no wonder not enough people are clicking on it.

One of the screens in the banner also features a video.

Testimonials come immediately below the banner as well as links to what the press is saying. Yours are buried beneath Fan quotes.

Think about encouraging repeat visits by offering branded printable score sheets (it's free advertising with your core group of buyers too).

Finally - watch this vid:

and see if you can't come up with some "improvements" to test.

Perhaps you could try more specific ad keywords? They'll probably cost much less, bring in potentially less traffic, but at the same time bring in a more targeted audience and hopefully increase your conversion rate.

Thanks for your time and input. You make very good points. I did review mint.com and watch the 7 Sins video and found both very helpful. We will be implementing some of those changes and retesting. Thanks again.

You are right, we have been getting 10-12% CTR on those adwords. But we already have had them running for 3 weeks or so. The CTR is great but sales don't refect that. Thanks for your comment and suggestion.
