So this might be old news to you guys. But as I'm planning my first major trip abroad I started planning how I would be able to work and make international (and local calls) in the cheapest and easiest fashion.

The end all answer is the Iphone (of course). With a jailbroken and unlocked Iphone you can (in most countries) buy a sim card with pre paid minutes and a pre paid dataplan.

With an jailbroken Iphone you can then tether the iphone to your lap top for internet connection virtually anywhere you have cell service. Furthermore with a jailbroken app called Iphoneover3g, you can use Skype WITHOUT a wifi signal to make international calls.

To me this is a life save as I hate talking business in a quite internet cafe or crowded hostel. I'll be in Argnetina which has a 3.5G network for the next few months so I'll be pretty much covered wherever I go.

Also, as a total iphone noob, it took me about 15 minutes to unlock and jailbreak the iphone with the iphone dev blog.

Cheers,

-Erick

I'm new here, never posted before.

Thanks for the tips on jail breaking and unlocking the iPhone, it wasn't as hard as I anticipated. Where did you download the iphoneover3g app from? I can't seem to find it anywhere I search. A link would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

I second the jailbroken, unlocked iphone as the best device just add skype and your golden just recently used it with Claro prepaid sim card in Dominican Republic and then would use skype while eating at one the beachside bars with free wifi, a 40 min call to the states for basically nothing we'll $3.95 a month

What a great tip. This can cost a small fortune.
