My muse is nearly complete (again). I now have a difficult decision to make. Who to market my product to? The way I see it, I have two different groups of people that I think would be interested in my product.

Group 1 is the auto enthusiasts and custom car owners– such as lowered trucks, chopped cars, show cars, etc… Basically people that want to add something cool to their ride and stay a step ahead of their buddies.

Group 2 is just about anybody that is tired of the photo radar cameras that seem to be every mile or so on our roads. Without getting into too much detail, my product allows your license plate to disappear with the flick of a switch.

By marketing to Group 1, I feel my audience is very small. Most of the marketing could be done by trade shows and a few targeted magazines in the industry. Group 2 is a much larger group that can be marketed to by PPC with very qualified keywords.

I would much rather focus my attention on Group 2. I can come up with a lot more sales copy and reasons to buy my product than I can for Group 1. The problem is selling my legal product in a way that could be used in an illegal way (avoiding the camera). If push comes to shove, is it better to ask for forgiveness than permission in this case?

I’d love to hear all of your thoughts on this. I have a web developer working on my site now, and I need to make a decision soon.

Thanks…

Normally, you would test the market and base your decisions on the results.

Setup two websites aimed at each group, optimise and test. Whichever gives the best conversion is the one to go for.

However, your muse is illegal and will probably get you arrested.

I agree. Split test everything and optimise it all.
