Who are you targeting? What are you going to do with it?
We need more information...

I am selling high end and trendsetting consumer electronics (like iphone accessories) and trying to build a brand. I would like advertising on major subject magazines for direct-response.
Looking at their media kits rates it would break my bank - for we are just a small start up with very ingenious ideas. I hear that advertisors already have negotiated discounts with different types of media and can package a nice campaign and provide some advice on what would be best for my products.
Any ideas would help - i am asking some friends in the agency business (Not sure who would be willing to work with a small company
) and looking on-line at mediabids.com - all interesting.

BTW, Tim's book is my bible. After two years of intensive planning, I finally quit my job over Xmas to pursue my dream full-time. In this economy, it's scary but invigorating.

Hmmm. Possibly you should read more than you type. It is important that you not take that the wrong way, please read it again.
Now...
Who are you targeting? What are you going to do with it? What are you selling?

I am looking for reputable print media buyers/ ad agencies that people here have actually worked with who can offer large discounts for print ads in national magazines. My product line consists of consumer electronics such as iphone/ipod accessories.
Any ideas? thanks in advance.

Hmm.. since there aren't many responses here and I can't offer what you are directly asking for. I'm going to give one piece of advice.. something that's served me very well.
If you want a discount. Ask for it. Then wait. Don't say anything, wait for the other person to say something back. Silence can be an uncomfortable motivator and is something I use regularly to get sales people to give me what I want. (I know this, because I used to watch people do it to me when I was the sales person!)
