View Full Version : Examples of eustress
The 'eustress' thought bomb is fascinating to me. I got lots of great ideas from the 'batching' thread and am looking for similar ideas here.
Eustress- cold calling, physical exercise, competitive sports, approaching an attractive member of the opposite sex (or any of the comfort challenges in the book), as Tim says in the book any kind of 'uncomfortable conversation'
Distress- multi-tasking, lack of rest or exercise, poor diet, information overload, abusive people
I'm sure there are infinite examples of both so I'd love to see people contributing their own ideas and examples.

I like to think of it as the combination of:
Hard Work + Passion + Doing Something You Genuinely Enjoy = Eustress.

Eustress = Anything that forces you to grow beyond your current limitations.
Distress = Anything that results in diminishing your current capacity.

Are you looking for real-life examples?
- heading to Ireland with no-where to live. I'm confident I can find somewhere, but it is a new experience to go somewhere and have no idea past the first two nights where I'll be sleeping.
- starting a website. I've spent years on the internet, but this is the first real (paid hosting, etc) website I've ever had. It was quite a rush getting it set up, and I've learned a lot as I work through the process.
- travel internationally for first time. I've never been out of the country before, and am about to head to Ireland for about 5 months.

For me over the last year:
- My website - as with froldt, it's been a great learning experience, especially from a marketing experience for me. I'm a programmer, so it's been a bit of a leap outside of my comfort zone.
- Proposing to my now fiance - it was the kick in the pants i needed!
- Buying my first house! What a whirlwind that was!
- International travel for the first time as well - went to Japan for 3 weeks and it was a blast!
Ways I am preparing to challenge myself in the coming year:
- Writing (it's been a long time dream of mine and something that is on my dreamline). I'm starting small by starting to blog.
- Supporting my website and working on more marketing (hopefully of the free kind!) with the view of generating a profit
- Buying a second house and doing some renovations.
- Getting married later in the year, then overseas travel for a month minimum for a mini retirement trial, not sure where, when or how!!!
- Committing to achieving spoken fluency in Chinese (Mandarin)
It's funny when I write it down like this, it shows to myself that I am moving forward, and I am tackling quite a few things at once. I encourage others to do the same.
