View Full Version : No Remote Work Possible....

With my current job, there isn't any way that I can negotiate a work-from-home [anywhere] setup. The company really avoids it, and I attempted this before I read the 4-Hr Workweek when I had an opportunity to work at another job (that I really didn't like that much), but could work-from-home [the other job/and elsewhere] with it, so I was going to try and "daylight". Well, it was a no go. I was going to offer to work 10-12 hours per day for three days a week, and also work remotely on the other days... and even "expand" my weekend availability. No such opportunity here.

I am VERY reluctant to eliminate this position because it pays about as much as I could make in this sort of position, and I would not likely find another opportunity to make this much money as a W-2 employee. Also, I have decent benefits including every sort of insurance our there (medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, life insurance for the entire family). Also, I do get three weeks of vacation, plus five days of sick leave.

A big part of the reason that I make so much money is that I actually put in my resignation to move to the other company (that I didn't really like), and they gave me a $10k/year raise to stay. Normally I would not have accepted, but I have been here a while since, and it has worked out great.

The positive is that while they expect me to be here for 40-45 hours a week, over five days, I can be pretty flexible throughout the day. Instead of a 8-5 (with a little extra time), I tend to work 9-6, and not put in the extra time. Since I tend to be here after 5P, everyone assumes that I am here late, and I often times sneak out before 6P (sometimes at 5P), and I sometimes come in late (and sometimes early). Also, I can leave in the middle of the day to handle things, if necessary, and I also could do other work, while I am here.

So, with that being said, I am trying to build up a few muses:

1) A politically motivated website that offers a place for people to vent about some politicians and buy some things through affiliate programs.

2) Hosted services, for residual income from low-maintenance customers.

3) Some IT consulting.

I think I can work on getting these while I am here. Once I get to a point where I have my monthly income high, and I have my expenses down (paying off everything, mortgage, student loans, cars), I will make the jump. I am going to focus my muse money to accelerate the payoffs on these things (something I have been doing anyway) and then make the jump. I will keep you all posted... but many of you have much more impressive stories than I.
