Approaching major retailers

Looking to go to major retailers with my product. I want to be prepared, obviously.

I am interested in profit margins ( what is expected on their end, 100%???)

What kind of biz infastructure they look for. I have a major chinese manufacturer. (details of manufacturer)

As well as how much digging they will do into me, such as credit rating, history of my company, yadayadayada.

any links or tips on this would be huge. my product falls under "clothing" and is priced at $5.

thanks for any ideas on these topics,
pura vida

My (little) experience is that retailers do not want to deal with one product vendors.

It is just too much hassle for them. The general markup I hear the most: from manufacturer to retailer is your selling price times 4, both the wholesaler and the retailer double the price. But as always, "everything is negotiable".

FYI- Diego. Just so you know, I deleted the duplicate post. No big deal, just wanted to make you aware of it. We like it clean and neat. <grin>

Diego,

Check out Mommy Millionaire by Kim Levine. Excellent book and it covers a lot of that info. As informative as 4HWW but less about strategy, more about how to. Very thorough step-by-step (anyone else get the NKOTB jingle in their heads just now? ha ha) with facts, figures, websites, scripts, etc. Talks about the entire supply chain and how to determine where you want your product to fit.

They won't even entertain you at all if you do not have a solid business plan.

put a plan together, then search for distributors for products like yours. They sell to retailers and have a larger reach that you do. Unless you can fill LARGE orders, major retail chains won't bother.
