View Full Version : Starting a muse - I worry about losing money

I suppose my biggest fear with starting a muse (and I am in very preliminary stages) is losing money on it. I have tried a few online business type things before, and unfortunately they were lots of work with little money. I have tried some adsense things before reading this book, and probably overall have lost at least a few hundred dollars with dead end experiments (such as affiliate marketing). Of course, this was following the direction of other books, and I was not following the principles of this book. Those experiences though have made me wary of dropping more money into adsense. However, it is possible and I want to get past that fear, I guess I just have to be willing to spend some money to test things out. It makes me ask myself, am I just wasting my money and time on something that may only work for a very small percentage of products or business-savvy people?

Even the preliminary testing phase of muses is outside my "comfort zone" - if it fails I'll feel bad about losing a few hundred dollars, not to mention the hours of labor setting up the website, though the money is a bigger issue to me right now. I am not sure how to get past this, as it is sort of the main thing preventing me from starting one right now. Guess I just have to get over it. Any advice for how to think about this?

Feel the fear and do it anyway.

You gotta get out of your comfort zone.

It's in the book. That's why people are stuck in the rut of life. They're used to normality, and familiarity,

I have been spending a lot of time pre-testing, which means looking at keywords on Google's estimator tool and doing the math of whether I'd make money at x price and y cost. If you feel confident you've found something that will work, then do a test. Maybe do a short 3 day one for $40 to get an idea.

I completely understand how you feel!

If people never got out of their comfort zones, then it'd be a very dull world to begin with. I don't think this book would have been written, for example. Appearance makes up a good bit of your market, so if you're concerned about the website, and spending hours of writing code or using a Dreamweaver clone, use elance.com.. I posted a request for a website there & within the first hour had over 8 bids, 2 in which called me personally. Outsource when you can, but do your market research to help you find your muse, instead of developing a product first and creating a market for it afterwards. Good luck! We're here to help

You can test your muse without having to mortgage the house. Worse case you're out $50-$200 but at least you gave it a shot.

You need to go for it. You just spend money on the test phase and if it doesn't work try something else.

You can't ever be successful without taking a risk!
