Hi
I have composed a lot of music in my life and spent half of my life in the studio :) , so i have an idea with an information/how to dvd in creating music, how to get ideas, how to setup the studio and so on..
So before im gonna make this dvd, i want to test the market and here im not really sure how to do it ?
Ebay or how would you normally test a product like this ?
Thank you!

Ebay, or adwords. But that takes site creation.
Are there products like this already selling on ebay?

Actually there is no one like the one im gonna make, the ones which on the market is all about how to use a studio, and not about how to create music, so the answer must be yes and no...Why ? you thinking of the price or.....

Well, in ebay, you put in your product description and maybe some pictures, and that's about it.
In order to run an adwords based marekt test, you of course have to have a website where to send the visitors to. Which takes more time and effort to create then putting a product description on ebay.
Regarding other products, it's always easier to figure out if there's a market for a product if you have similiar products already selling.

Dub,
Im working on a similar product, only it is all about hip-hop music production.
It tested superbly.
Here is my suggestion. Create a quick site, take several screen videos with something like camtasia or cam studio (which is free). This would have to be things like mixing or working with plug ins since you can only record video of your screen, and upload them on youtube then inbed them in your website.
I use 000webhost, which is a free webhost and I spent like $10 for a domain name. So your initial investment for testing is minimal.
You can then go and start posting on forums like gearslutz.com or anything that has to do with songwriting and composing, there is tons of them out there. Of course include your URL in your signature. Don't try to spam the forums with posts like "Get my DVD now".
In order to test interest I created a sign-up form on my order page, which says sign up here to reserve a copy of your DVD when it becomes available.
It is as easy as that. Then drive some traffic through adwords, making articles on Ezinearticles and creating a blog. Use google analytics to monitr your stats.
Good luck.

Thanks a lot man :-)
So have you considered how to make some kind of "copy protection" to yours ?
I think it could be a good idea, cause as you probably know a lot of pirates out there :-)
The reason that you upload them to you tube and then link to them from your site, is that because then you don't have to pay for space at your homepage for upload the videos ?
Gonna start in next week, so very exited to see if mine is gonna test superb as well :-)
Cheers and good luck to you as well!

Well i thought about using a digital delivery service like Payloadz. I don't really know how to make these videos protected but i might try.
My problem so far has been with a very flaky video editor, who held my files ransom for months on end without ever doing anything.
I fnally got the hard drive with the files yesterday and it turned out i can't use them, because the drive needs to be initialized, which means it will delete everything on it. Bummer.
Be careful with video people. I would suggest you do as much of your program on your own with a screenshot software like camtasia. I am sure you can get a relatively cheap camera to shoot any other shots, but thats up to you.
Now don't upload your whole program on Youtube of course, use it only as a teaser. Also having these videos on Youtube will drive traffic to your site.
Thanks a lot man :-)

I am sorry to hear that man.... Are you sure that there isnt any way around it ?
Maybe try some of the computer forums out there.....I mean in my ears it sound a little wierd....
Maybe i didnt understand before, but the reason you choose youtube is that you dont have to pay for the space for the videos on your own homepage right ?
Cheers and i am crossing my fingers for you files will survive, thats for sure!

yeah the reason you go with Youtube is so that it doesn;t eat the nadwith on your website. Since videos hog a lot of it, you are safe with youtube, although even hosting them on your website for testing purposes should be ok.
If you go with a digital delivery service like payloadz, they will host all your files for you, so no worries there.
As for the files, the problem is that they were edited on a mac. I then tried accessing the drive on my pc, and that causes problems. So I initialized it on my pc, it didn't work and then i brough it to a friend who hs a mac. Now the mac wouldn't recognize the drive and wanted to initialize it. So the files are most probably lost. But anyway, i will deal with it.

In terms of getting a feel for market interest in your product wasn't there some way that Tim talks about to ascertain hits on keywords on Google?
I remember actually running some of those searches to see if people are actually looking for my potential product. Somewhere on here Tim has a breakdown of how much business you can expect based on how many people are searching for your potential adwords.
It was a couple weeks ago that I read it, so I will try to figure out where I saw it.

Yes looking at Keywords is one way of researching a niche.
Another one is to be so into the niche yourself that you know what people will want. If he is offering something that no one else offers than people are not gong to search for it.
He will have to be a little bit more creative with marketing though.
The same thing happened to me. When I tested the Hip Hop music production DVD, I also posted a lot on related message forums, advertised on Craigslist!!!, and a bunch of other things that drove traffic because there wasn't enough traffic from keywords.
Thankfully, my hypothetical converion rates are quite high (7% as opposed to 2% avg for ecommerce). So Im happy.

Hi Kjeldgaard. I'm trying to do a similar thing. I made a mock web site at:
http://www.songwritingdvd.com/
Let me know if anything comes of your idea!
