In the book Tim uses overture to test google ad words and get an idea of how many clicks he will get to his site per word tested. The problem I ran into is that overture is now owned by Yahoo and is not nearly as helpful. For instance Tim states what % of web clicks the old overture tracked. Yahoo will not give this kind of info.
Basically what I would like to know is what are people doing now to test google add words and how do they estimate what sucess they will get before investing in the google adwhelp.ords.
Thanks for your help.

Yep, you can try and use the external google keyword tools.

One program I have been playing lately is called Market Samurai (google it). They had a 40 day free trial that might still be available. It's got a nice interface for doing keyword and competitive research. I am in no way affiliated to them, just sharing something I have found useful.

you absolutely want to use word tracker (www.wordtracker.com). industry leading keyword research tool, plus tons of documentation on the site to help you along the way. you can take a free trial, use the service by the day or up to a year there are plenty of choices to choose from payment wise. highly highly recommended over any of the free tools that are out there. if you have any questions regarding keyword research or on anything in general feel free to pm me i would be happy to help.
