so my test website should be ready within a week. i basically just want to see if the market will bite so it's going to be a very simple site that no one will be able to order just yet. in terms of testing, should i find someone on elance/other who is profeccient in SEO and PPC (google adwords, etc.)? this is my first time with all of this so i can use any advice you guys have. Thanks!

Usually, you should have done this on your own at least once. Seo isn't neccessary for startes, unless you know what you're doing, it's going to take a while to produce results, anyway.

What you can do, though, is SEM aka PPC marketing. Use Tim's Ads from the book as a template and be sure to inculde
a) Your main keyword in either first or second line of the ad.
b) An Attention getter as the Headline (Something like a claim or Result of people using your product in relation to a problem they might have or a solution they might be looking for).
c) Make sure you do different adgroups for every different keyword and also make sure you but bid on broad, exact and phrase match of the keyword within one adgroup.

I realise this might all be a little bit overwhelming, but being proficient or at least able to use these tools to drive traffic to your site is basically the bread and butter in internet marketing in general - and definitely worth an extra day checking out googles very own Online Tutorials and Tutorial videos on the topic.

It only takes a few hours, which isn't much compared to working a few days in a row in most normal jobs in order to be able to afford to pay someone doing it for you who does know what he's doing. Especially SEO is really expensive if done right, everything that doesn't cost above 1000 Dollars or more is basically linkspam.

Of course, finding someone to do ppc for you on elance might work, but chances are you'll only get people for cheap that know not much more than what you yourself could acquire in terms of skills by simply fiddling around with it for a while and spending the budget you've saved on testing. And since you'd have to give them access to your adwords account and see your landing pages, you might just invite someone more skilled then you in internet marketing to use your budget as a market test and then go and recreate the product himself, probably being able to market it more cost-efficiantly then you are as a beginner.

So try to get around the basics yourself.
But, seriousl,y If you *Really* can't wrap your head around this, shoot me a pm and we see if we can work something out.

Cheers
