I just booked a free ticket from Tokyo to Nevada (I love frequent flier miles). I am not missing another Burning Man this year because I refuse to make excuses. Anyone else want to go?

...www.burningman.com (http://www.burningman.com)...

WHAT IS BURNING MAN? Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. It is a 40,000 person 'festival' held every year in the Nevada desert. Try google next time.

Basically a lot of people of people are messed up on a lot of drugs while some of the craziest art on the planet is coming alive around them. it's pretty insane....

Oh. lol. There are people that go out to the deserts of Nevada and have these parties to get aliens to come or something. It's weird. I think they try to get near Area 51 and do it.

When is the burning man?

Edit: Oh, it's on the site. I might go, it looks interesting and I definitely need a reward for all my work. Plus I've been very interested in Vegas.

Actually, the color most seen by the blind is black. Its also the default color your brain sees when it cant really see and your eyes are working, so that takes care of the problems one can have with the eye; And If the data connection from your optical nerve to your visual cortex is fully severed you even go into seeing a grayish color that becomes the backdrop to whatever your mind places on it.

Now please explain burning man better ;)

Drugs are there. Naked sex fests are there. They are a small part though. You can find anything in a group of 40,000 people. They are by no means the reason why the majority of people go to Burning Man.

It is a week long festival in the desert. The logistics are pretty incredible when you think about getting 40,000 people together for anything. Many groups plan the entire year. Many themed camps, art cars, and shows make the trip every year.

The whole thing is an expression of freedom, and it can't really be described unless you have been. I haven't been so my description surely doesn't do it justice.

I do know that there are a huge number of people who wait 11 months and 3 weeks every year to be given the official greeting they give at the gates to Burning Man: Welcome Home.

I have wanted to go for years, and this year is the year, I will be making the trek. I am tired of making excuses about not having the time/money... I have a frequent flier ticket lined up, and will be flying form Japan to San Francisco, and then hitching a ride from there to Black Rock City in the Nevada Desert.

My friend runs Radio Electra at BM. Stop by and ask for Gary. Tell him Tim Weaver sent you. He might actually talk to you, still. :)

If you end up down in Phoenix for some odd reason, PM me and we'll meet for a beer and a laugh.

im going!!!!

that was a pretty darn good description for someone who has never been kamakiri!

i usually describe it as an experimental city, rather than a festival..you will see when you get there that art takes a back seat to moment-to-moment civic life.

my fairly strong advice to you...learn about the basic rules and survival, and then do not research it or look at photos at all. and be mentally prepared to full y engage because its easy to get overwhelmed, be shy, afraid, etc.

have an awesome burn!!!!

Stop by camp APOKILIPTIKA. I will be there. Just look for the guy dressed in a Japanese hakama or a kilt. I should be the only one.

We got some primo placing at 3 o'clock and A. We teamed up with a few other camps and are called Terminal City. Stop on by.

I will be leaving Japan on 8/20 and getting back on 9/4, so almost a half a month. I am very stoked. Just doing a bit of cosplay tonight with one of the outfits I am bringing along.

How very Richard Chamberlain. Will you next be breaking out into a rousing rendition of "Blackthorne's Shanty"?

:D

haha ohhhh to be a virgin again...if i looked for a guy in hakama or kilt that would narrow down the population to about 500 people. within your camp, maybe 10 ;)

No sword? I guess it wouldn't make it through airport security.

See everyone. I will be offline for 2 weeks. The bus to the airport leaves in 5 hours.

Have a great time. If you get a chance and want to chat, give me a ring. My business line is 602-402-7385, otherwise, enjoy!!

Webgal, I've flown with firearms, so a sword shouldn't be a problem. Might be an issue trying to get it back INTO Japan, but that's a different story. :)

I am back now. Burning Man was the biggest eye opening experience I have ever had. The white outs, radical self reliance, and 24 hour pulsing music was incredible.

I hope the rest of you have the opportunity to go next year.

I do regret not meeting Tim there though(or even knowing he went until I got back and read it on his blog).

I didn't go. ;)

Does he have two blogs, because http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/ doesn't list anything about it that I see....

Glad you had a good time. Did you get to stop by Radio Electra?

Here it is. Not sure where you were looking: 4HWW Cover Story in Men’s Journal (Plus: Be in a Movie) (http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2008/08/12/4hww-cover-story-in-mens-journal-plus-be-in-a-movie/)

I never made it by Radio Electra. There were about 45,000 things I had on the list that I didn't get to. It is a lesson on how to go with the flow.

I guess the fact that the topic was about something completely different from Burning Man...I suppose I inferred that there was a dedicated blog post on it.

I was in touch with my Radio Electra friend. He says that it was....interesting...this year :)
