View Full Version : Just asked my boss for a remote work arrangement

First of all, I say "just" but I did it a week ago Friday. I'm still in disbelief that he said YES so I haven't wanted to spread the word in case I jinx myself or something.

To tell you the truth...it feels AMAZING!! I had finished the book about a week to a week and a half earlier and had said to myself (about working from home) "why the hell not?"

My boss and I were in a meeting and I had no intentions of asking him yet. I needed to get a few more "things" in place...what things?...I have no idea. There probably never would have been a good time. But we started talking about lack of office space and I said to myself what the hell...now is as good a time as any.

I said, ya know, I've been thinking of something and I said my spiel. I made it all about my boss and the department and how everybody would benefit.

Side note: I had just attended a work-sponsored conference on "change" and one of the things they emphasized was that when you ask someone/people to change, make sure you focus on all the positive things they are getting out of it. The tendency is for people to focus on what they will be losing. So I did this as much as possible.

Once I asked, I'll never forget my bosses first words...he said, "so, what?, you want to work from home?" in a classic, sarcastic, disbelief kind of way. I quickly said, no, I want a remote work arrangement (I think this sounds better and "working from home" still has a negative connotation to it). He paused for a minute and said, ya know, that just might work.

I then picked myself up off the floor. Even though I knew he'd say yes (I had seen it and believed it in a "The Secret" kind of way), I couldn't believe it if you know what I mean. The best thing is that I went for the whole 9 yards. I hadn't asked for 1 or 2 days but for the whole week right up front. I figured why dilly-dally.

My only mis-step was that he asked me when I wanted to start and like an idiot I said August 1st. What was I thinking? I should have said tomorrow...but I'm still thrilled with the outcome and I figure that me saying Aug. 1 makes it look like I'm not too eager to do it.

I tell you all this to let you know that it TRULY can be done. All you have to do is do. Your boss is not going to come to you and ask if you want to "work from home." You have to ask and believe that it will happen.

I'm living proof (if nothing earth shattering happens before now and Aug 1) and as trite as it may sound, if I can do it, you CAN DO IT!

Do what you know you should...and do it now!

All the best,
To your success,
To your happiness,
To your remote work arrangement,
D.I.N.

Wow. Awesome story. Just don't get so excited that you increase your productivity just yet - save that for after you are remote - and make sure to look for an opportunity in the next few weeks to 'help' your boss out by advancing the remote arrangement to July 1 - or whenever.

Awesome, congrats! Don't be too hard on your self you got the work from home so it doesn't matter that it's Aug 1st that not far off.

Good Job. Maybe try a couple days a week up until August 1st to work out any tech problems that might occur, and really test the remote work agreement so when you go full time out of the office it goes really smooth.
