I got told yesterday that I had only until the end of the month until my contract was expired and no longer renewed; In the consulting field this is me getting fired.
I'm told it was for budgetary reasons; My boss made the joke that he could hire 3 PHD'ed engineers from China to do my job for the cost they are paying for me; I suspect the number of people is actually higher, but really did not want to go into it with him as he is still ignorant of that aspect of my skill set.
Either way I'm out on my butt at the end of the month, despite it all and I'm not really sure what to do now given that I dont have a muse up yet.. and I have a lot of peopel depending on me. I have lots of ideas, but I am missing data on how to put them together.
(my next post will be in automation)

I'm not really sure what to do now
1) start stealing as much stuff as u can that u can hock later, toner/print cartages are expensive and have decent resale value.
2) Create more work for urself. whatever you were doin for them *accidentally* crashes and burns 3 days b4 you are to leave... oops, who's gonna clean up the mess?
3) Blackmail you say? Photoshop + google image search with the filter off = proof that your boss is cheating on his wife! ZOMG he would hate to have that made public.
4) Frivolous lawsuit is always in season
5) Remember that scene from fightclub them norton beats himself up in the office and it looks like the boss did it? pure. gold.

So if I take your advice on that...? ;)
I'm finding it hard to focus on the things that matter - like my muses - and its a very strange feeling indeed. Thats the hard part, ofr at least the hardest.. too much worry, etc in my head.

dking- Perhaps the person who placed you there? You have a headhunter, right? And there's craigslist and headhunters who specialize in programming job opportunities.
Most muses don't start paying off quickly, particularly when you have dependents. I can't live off what some here do for one person. So I think maybe you concentrate on finding a regular income so you can get in a groove and then think comfortably about your muse idea.
You have insurance concerns, dependents, payments. It takes more than 2 weeks to tackle all that.
By the way, I think once you leave they'll realize how valuable you were.

Actually they have there own internal recruiters trying to contact me to hire FTE; I'm just not as interested in them as they are in me, since they pay salary and that means more work for less pay in this publicly traded company.
I have recruiters looking, its just annoying.

First things first. In all of your posts you sound pretty down about the whole situation, which is by all means your right.
But try to remember why you get excited about 4HWW. For me, at least, it was because I have better things to do than work, don't you?
Try to keep positive, because the crap is going to come one way or another, and the only thing you can control is how you respond to it.
If you can master your inner self, take the depression and squeeze it's guts out, then you've got it made.
You just watch. There is something better waiting in the wings for you, whether it be a fantastic muse or a great new contract that will let you BUILD that great muse. You're on a path to greatness, my friend, and only you can stop you.

I came back to post this very nugget of wisdom to find that someone had beat me to it. Look at this as an opportunity.

Your telling a blind guy to watch? lulz.

1. Anything I build on a contract is owned by the person paying for the work; Thats the law. I cant leverage my work for my own muses because it would be illegal.
2. I'm turning into the fat guy with a red you-know-what, without the damn car since I could not even see it as anything more than a smudge after 10 or so feet.
3. I'm getting absolutely no support at all anybody. Last night I was guilt tripped into a dinner of a 10oz lobster, drawn butter, authentic clam chowder, etc. I should have enjoyed the meal, but it was not really anything that special. I would have preferred to stay at home, gotten a hot shower in, and gone to sleep early after a fast trip to McD's, and used the money saved for a muse.
4. I'm so tired I can barely stand, and its so much effort to type this.
All people around me see is the money I make and what it can get them, how they can enjoy it. They don't see the hard work it takes to make it, the long days of suffering required to pay for the meal, or the medical bills I have to pay because I'm the only person in the family that ever made anything of himself. I feel like that high roller on the plane sounded in the 4hww book; The walking dead. And I'm not even a %1 as successful.

I think the programmer types are talking in code.
The good news is that you have made something of yourself. Give yourself one more day to drown in misery, do the whole Eeyore melancholy mood thing. And then SNAP OUT OF IT. Decide you are going to find that open door. You're the only one who can pull himself up by the boot straps.
Just remember, you're talented. Even if the company doesn't appreciate it, you know it. One thing at a time. Get some income thing going and then focus on the muse. You're not going to get anywhere floundering. Focus.

Whew, thanks, I thought I was in never-never land :)
Good advice here, I actually find going back to things you loved as a child and/or made you passionate in school somewhere is a great place to start. And deal with the other crap as you must to survive - Good Luck!

Sound Advice Webgal. This is very true, there should be a book written about following your muse in relation to childhood dreams.

Yes, Code.
What I really like to do is pick things a part, see what makes them tick, then figure out ways to make them better; The issue here is I work with systems that are already created better then I do creating the system itself. If anybody needs an auditor for your projects code, pm me, but outside of that I have several ideas for muses that I cant seem to get off the ground because it seem you need to be an "Accredited Investor" or "Finical Institution" to even gain access to them, and basically its illegal to get into these areas unless you have a million dollars in your bank account. I hate that sort of limitation, its artificial.

I find this to be the case with a number of things. It is frustrating.
