View Full Version : Bar in paradise

I've decided that I want to open my own bar in an exotic location somewhere on this globe. It's still at the very provisional stages of planning though at the moment SO can anyone recommend any favourite holiday destinations for me to locate my bar?
I don't want it to be overrun with British 18-30s but other than that I'm really open to any ideas and will be doing a lot of scouting myself over the coming few years as I seek to set the dream in motion. The bar is going to be very chilled out, classy but not so that it's up its own arse...
Like I said I'm still at the brainstorming stage at the moment so would love to hear anyone's ideas or experiences. All contributions will be rewarded with a free drink or two once it's up and running!

I would hardly call that advertising mate. I think the link is great and the spot looks very nice. It was a helpful link.
Anyways, check this out. http://www.rickscafejamaica.com/index.php It is rated in the top 10 bars in the world. I've been there and I think it has the feeling you are going for. The thing is though, that this bar is really not close to much of anything in Jamaica. It took me 2 hours to get there and I didn't even care. I had heard so much I had to try it out. It was def worth it. That's the kind of feeling you want your customers to have.
Let us know what you come up with.

Hm, well, if someone makes a 250K sale on this forum, please kindly offer Tim a broker's fee :p
yossarian, are you looking to buy something existing or build your own or rent? I am sorely lacking on exotic vacation experiences, but I've heard a lot of great things about Costa Rica. Not exactly a muse, but interesting idea...

Like I've said before, 90% of people on this forum are all talk and will never do anything with their ideas so don't count on it :)

Hire a personal assistant to scour the earth looking for tropical bars for sale.

Yossarian - You are in for a very hard time. Running a bar in a tourist town is not conducive to a 4HWW. I have a small restaurant chain that started as a 400 sq foot bar/pizza shop in Nagasaki, on the southern tip of Japan, and this life is no pick nick.
This isn't advertising either, but if you come up with $5,000 down by the end of this month, I will sell you an entire shop for $10,000. I am getting out of the business.
On the flip side, we have the tall ships festival, and there are 5 huge sailing ships in the harbor. Tomorrow I am taking the day off, even though it is a Saturday, (the whole town is out at the tall ships festival anyway). A customer invited me out on his yacht to view the ships from the ocean for the day.

As already discussed this idea isn't going to be about working as few hours as possible and I wouldn't consider it a muse either so to some extent does not belong on these forums..
HOWEVER I think that it is entirely consistent with the themes of living your dreams and exploring the world we live in so thought I would put it out there. My ETA on this is 3 years time so a very loooong way to go and lots of fine details to be hammered out!
Any advances on Costa Rica and Jamaica?

Just because it doesn't fit perfectly with the 4hww philosophy doesn't make it a bad idea. If you know what you are getting into, and know that is what you want, then I think it is great. If you do well enough, you can hire a manager to run the place while you enjoy the fruits of your success. I would rather work at a bar in the tropics than have a 9-5 here.

Check out Boracay Island in the Philippines. Considered best each in the world and its just gaining popularity now (tourism is in a boom). Actually there are many beaches like this in the Philippines...just being discovered
Actually I'm here working in the Philippines right now. Planning to go to Boracay in June. I can definitely do some scouting for you

I think you guys are not looking at the complete picture. From my own personal experience of being in corporate banking, leaving everything to move to Japan, hitch hiking around the country and finally opening my own bar/pizza shop in the tourist town of Nagasaki. That being said, if someone had told me then, what I am saying now I wouldn't have listened anyway.
There are a lot of guys like me in the world. You have a very good chance at just buying one of them out. We are all over, and anyone who has been in business for 5-7 years is probably thinking about the next thing. $10-$30,000 will go a long way when buying a bar. You can get one for pennies on the dollar, and avoid the hassle of trying to conform to local regulations (let alone trying to understand them), while at the same time, betting a built out place.

Sorry to double post here, but I came across this blog post on my RSS just now and I though of you.
The Doorway To Your Dream Life (http://www.thechangeblog.com/2008/04/27/the-doorway-to-a-your-dream-life/)
(Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with that site, blog, name...)
It really chimes in down towards the bottom in part 2.
