I'm a complete beginner with website creation and elance.
I was wondering if anyone else had a good experience with a company/person either on elance or the internet.
I have very little budget so I was thinking elance/India would be the place.
Anyone got any advice? - It would be greatly appreciated!

be careful with elance.. maybe i havent been good at vetting the providers but ive been less than impressed with my experiences. in fact i wish i had just paid a real web designer up front since im redoing the logo and images anyway..
YMMV

Think you would be as well contacting local designer or even a student - shouldn't cost much more than $30 an hour provided you steer clear of self styled digital marketing agencies. Get a simple site and work on it as you go. My sites are beta right now - don't look or feel right but it will get there.
Look at webgals blog link in above posting - does the job fine.
Look at Tims blog - think it is done on wordpress - simple ,effective and if you can get someone to sort a decent template for you, you can update and edit it yourself. Just depends on your project. I will be taking a couple of hangdog sites of my own and using this.
Also I did contact Brickwork India and they quoted 64 man hours and $20 per hour - for a five page web site they are having a giggle - or perhaps between 4hww and the world is flat business has gone off the scale.
Much love,.

I'm wanting a website, a very simple business website. I have posted flyers at the local University but exams are looming so students are very busy at the moment.
I've asked friends, to ask friends if they know anyone who could do it but I've had no luck there either.

I have a question for you guys. I was going to create an etutorial for taking wordpress and turning it into a menu driven website.
So, I'm wondering if I should create an etutorial for creating one for small ecommerce (fewer than 10 products) or one with no ecommerce. I would guess most here would need some type of shopping cart.
What if that included a paid theme that costs about $75? Or would everyone prefer it to be a free website theme (I have found one but the other makes the process easier.)
This would present a do-it-yourself solution. It would not include the planning process that includes target market position or marketing, more the nuts and bolts of getting a website although there has to be an outline for the menu architecture.

Check out this site. It's an inexpensive do it yourself site that holds your hand and walks you step by step through the process. They boast something like 65% of their sites are in the top 3% of search engines and they actually can PROVE that. Also, they have a money back guarantee.
Good luck,
Kerri

Hi Anne,
This is a great idea... In fact, I already created a video tutorial on how to do this and would be happy to share it. I just have to find it... I had a hard drive crash the other day and am hoping it was backed up on my External HD.
Wordpress is awesome... and most people don't realize you can use it as a complete CMS without even having a blog if you dont want to.
Let me look for the video.... If I find it I'll post it up.
HOWEVER... the only problem is finding themes that support using it without a blog... for instance, nice looking 1 column themes with the menu across the top and without sidebars works best. AND, if you would be willing to create a cool theme (preferably with different color options)... I'd buy it. especially if you put in an ecommerce plug in option.
I'll let you guys know if I find the tutorial. (this was going to be one of the things I give to the students of the course I was talking about in the other thread... was going to give it away to anyone looking into the course... but its cool.. If I can find it, I'll bring it out now).
Make it a great day!

Well, since I am getting hammered about trying to "sell something" here... even though I think its very beneficial...
It kinda feels like I should point out that she just posted an affiliate link... not that I care... but I know some of you will have a cow about it.
Sitesell is OK... I used it for a while for several sites...
Pros:
* Concentrates on the content
* Provides tools for keyword and market research
* Has a very active and helpful community
* They come out with new tools and components fairly often.
* SEO is great, due to structure and the way its built
* Its easy to use for non techies
Cons:
* Its expensive
* Little flexibility
* Sitesell sites are usually ugly (remember content matters most)
* if you want a blog, they offer one, but its kind plain and you dont have choice
* You have to buy the domain name & hosting from them, instead of having freedom to hold your domain elsewhere if you want
* The site itself is not really owned by you... the content is, but not the site itself
* if you are a techie/designer... you'll be frustrated quickly
Hope this helps!

I've noticed it too...I just don't want to present myself as the police of the board when I'm not...anyway...she posted the same link in several posts, I'm sure a warning is coming.

That's what I've been looking into. Creating a WEBSITE with WP and not a blog. And to make some things easy. There are two basic templates (They are not easy to find). One is free and the other you have to pay for but it's not expensive. But either way, show a few options so it can be changed up.
Thanks for the feedback, Shane.
