heres another "how can we make the fam. biz a muse" and its a real noodle scratcher
ok, heres how it goes:

My father is a professional artist. He works all day in his basement studio from october-ish to May-ish creating his original handmade art, re-making more of his old designs and creating new ones.

His art is unique as it is sheet metal relief work, using brass, copper, and silver. He uses chemicals to oxidize the metal to bring out different colors. he also uses a chemical process to bond silver to the brass and copper, and electroplates gold to the silver. This is all sealed in a metal laquer to protect the work and prevent future corrosion. the rest of the process is several steps to mounting it inside a frame. The whole chemical process is of his own creating and truly makes one of a kind art. Its important to note that exactly what he does to produce his art is fully only known by him.

Spring and fall he travels all over the united states selling his work at art exhibitions and greek festivals. theres a point in the middle of the summer he works to create more of his best sellers in time for fall.

www.vaxxine.com/zoudis or zoudis.com is the site, and you really need to have a look at some of his work to understand what he does. The site is slightly dated as i made it something like 6+ years ago when frames/tables were the common way to organize things. Also he has 350+ designs that he still makes, so u dont really have to go through all of them.

There is no automated anything on the site because there is no guarantee that he will have that particular piece/pieces in stock at any given time, and often there is a 3-4 month waiting period if he has to start from scratch.

I would love to hear any ideas on ways to approach this differently

Well off the top of my head, it seems a marketing campaign and solution is what is needed for this type of biz - along with good SEO - so as the niche audience can be reached more effectively. Automation wise, if that is what you want to do, it is like any other biz where you need to keep track of current stock. Otherwise, speciality items have to be dealt with individually.
That's just my opinion.

I didn't understand the site at first. The art needs to be on the front page. A picture of it. Otherwise I'm confused. Jenn Mattern is a PR person who does mostly PR for artists and musicians. If you want her website, I can find that out and post it here.

But it does need to be marketed. It does needs some kind of organization. By what's available and special order with an inventory count.

It's amazing art. Clearly, it takes considerable time. But art is so personal and it takes time to build your following.

Totally new website obviously. Pay people to go to shows in place of your dad.

Thank you all for your opinions and comments, i value them.

Remember that right now the only ppl that know of his work are his numerous customers over the last almost 30 years.
About the look/feel of the site, this is what my father wanted, there was a landing page but he wanted that removed.
I was thinking about finding/creating a online inventory tool for him and integrating it into the site (or a new searchable site), however old school guy that he is would never take the time to keep the site updated...

I wanted to hear your ideas, but i already had a path in mind that no1 has mentioned here so far. I would like to have his art mass produced. Being hand-made, this is a huge change but there is a process and designs that can b used or licensed out or whatever. If you know about certain art, they produce "limited printings" each with a "#3 of 120" etc and this may b an option.

I already let my father borrow my audio-book copy of 4hww (read: sat down with him and made him listen against his will) and now he's planning a mini-retirement to his house in Greece all next year :D
Theres a lot i need to figure out, obviously, from getting many of the popular designs produced to distribution through what i hope would be high end store.
