View Full Version : Tim's Blog...
Can anyone tell me the software Ferriss uses for his 4HWW blog? It does pretty much what I want a blog to do, so why reinvent the wheel if I can find something that works....?

It's hard to go past WordPress
expandable, flexible, FREE (!) & thousands of free themes out there
(or go to rentacoder.com & have you're own made for $100)

Tim's blog is wordpress. Mine is, too. I would recommend going with a wordpress host account (one of their chosen hosts on a list) and have someone download it via fantastico. There are designs in wp that are 'wireframe' and therefore more seo friendly.
You have a tech person, right TW? With WP, updates are one button click with the right host and would be less expensive than paying an hourly rate to have it done manually. That's the advantage of the host list they offer that offers one click update.
I have to do it manually. It's not a piece of cake although most everything else about it is.

Yes, it says he uses wordpress in this post, where he interviewed the creator:

Thanks everyone. Now to find a reasonable host. I really don't want to pay for the blog just starting out, but if it means ease-of-use, etc., I can consider it.
I am tech enough to know that I know what I know I don't know. :)

There's a few hosting companies listed here:
http://www.auctionadscash.com/hosting/
that run about $4-6 per month and have Fantastico available, which offers quick install and updates of Wordpress and other packages.
You can get a wordpress blog for free at wordpress.com

You can do it though wordpress. But your url will be something like:
http://yourwebsite.wordpress.com
That's fine but if you wanted to move it later, it could be a problem and I don't know how many custom changes you'd be able to make. But it's the easiest and the most free.
To download it to a url:
http://wordpress.org/hosting/
$6.95 per month. These are one-button updates. I would guess a url would be $15 per year or $7 if you didn't want to book them as a package. I go for the package so that changes in the future are easier. It's so much easier. Blue Host has fantastico.
Let us know and we can talk you through it. You've offered a lot of help and advice. You have more than earned the right to some guidance.
it's my understanding also that if you do it through WP themselves with the subdomain, then you can link to categories on their front page and link into searches on their site.etc which would be a big traffic boost i can imagine.
What's so good about Fantastico??

What's so good about Fantastico??
Fantastico handles all the database setup, file "upload", etc for dozens of web applications through a single control panel.
If you want to install Wordpress, normally you have to setup a MySQL database with a user and password, download the Wordpress install package, upload it to your webserver, go though the Wordpress install, input the MySQL information, set up a Wordpress user name and password, etc etc etc
With Fantastico, you just select "Wordpress", put in what you want for your Wordpress username and password and click install. It takes care of all the database stuff. It also allows one click upgrades. Wordpress is on a 180 day release cycle, so every 2-4 months you would normally have to go to Wordpress, get the latest release, disable all your plug-ins, backup your database, upload the new install package, etc. With Fantastico, it lets you know if there's a new version and you click the "update" button and it's done.
Fantastico also offers a half a dozen other Blogging packages if Wordpress isn't right for you, along with message boards, shopping carts, CRM, wikies, mailinglists, image galleries, surveys, etc. All with the simple install / upgrade control panel.

With certain hosting packages comes Fantastico. You go to the panel. You pick what you want. You click a button. It asks some things like if you want it in a folder and what password do you want for the admin section.
And then....drum roll................you click a button. And less than 30 seconds later, you have your blog all nice and installed on the internet.
Wow..easy. I like easy. You look up "easy" in the dictionary, there's my picture. Wait...that didn't sound right. But you get what I mean.
Very helpful! Very Cool! Very Magical!
Very Fantastico!

I thought I'd yank that out of context just for fun. Hey, the media does it to Tim.
That's some funny stuff right there!
