The Random Show, Episode 24: Porn Attacks, Eating Insect Protein, Tech Finds, and More

There are dozens of topics covered in this tea-infused, bromantic episode of scatterbrained nonsense.

Like what? Well: porn (including select picks), taking an “alcohol vacation,” fixing low testosterone, the wonders of insect protein, start-up talk, and much more. O-tanoshimi dane!

Please note: The 100 free spots for Exo protein bars filled up in less than 15 minutes! Hope to do more giveaways next month, but — in the meantime — you can get Exo here, while inventory lasts. My favorite flavor right now is cacao nut.

This edition of The Random Show was recorded and edited by Graham Hancock(@grahamhancock). For all previous episodes, including the epic China Scam episode, click here.

Enjoy!

I’d really like a full post or discussion on your experiences on transcendental mediation. You mentioned you were going to do one in TimTimTalkTalk T4 The Tim Ferriss Show ep.1 with Kevin. I can corroborate Tim’s experiment having performed something very similar two months ago. It sounds ludicrous, but give up porn and masturbation for 30 days as a challenge. I think you’ll be astounded by the effects (energy levels, testosterone, creativity, will power, and so much more). Happy to share more if anyone is interested.

Fun fact: the hormone oxytocin is released when you have an orgasm. For men, interestingly, it is only released when you have an orgasm with someone you love.

Not so fun fact: porn isn’t love.

Good luck in going with no pron for a month, Tim. Its an awesome strategy that will help you to feel things that you haven’t felt for a long time. You’re going to feel more motivated, sexually charged and masculine.

Pron is a serious issue affecting males all over the world today. They just don’t know it though. A great analogy: you can eat McDonalds today, tomorrow & next week and you won’t get a heart attack anytime soon. Life seems great. But if you consistently do this over an extended period of time, you’re buying a one-way ticket to heart attack city that you’ll use at some point in the future. Similarly, dudes that are watching porn 3-4 times a week are guaranteeing themselves health-related problems at some point in the future. Things like low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, social anxiety, depression, etc are all common. The science has begun to catch up and reveal some intriguing findings. Eg. a cocaine addict’s brain scan is similar to that of a pron addict.

The Taoists practiced sex energy many years ago and Napolean Hill talked about it in Think and Grow Rich. Its not rocket science: if the Taoists and Napolean Hill recognized that the simple behaviour of mastrbation can become an issue for men hundreds of years ago, imagine the negative effect of modern internet pron on the male brain and body.

ps: Kevin, if you consider pron a harmless diversion, you should talk to marriage therapists and divorce lawyers.

I have also seen lots of reports that masturbation is very healthy, and that abstainers suffer from all sorts of problems (depression, prostate issues etc).

A random Google search reveals hundreds of articles on the benefits of regular masturbation. I would post links here but it doesn’t let me, so I guess I have to search for the findings you mention too. I have to admit they sound suspicious to me 🙂

The Taoists have some amazing exercises that are like a cross between kegel exercise and focused breath meditation that will send your testosterone through the roof.

I’m not sure there have been any studies conducted on the practices but anecdotally, they can really turn your health around. I’ve noticed stronger erections, massively increased stamina, and almost complete ejaculation control. Also they make you horny as a 15 year old.

Combine that with waking up early (just don’t use curtains and let the sun wake you up), and you’ll have morning wood every day and never need another cup of coffee or other stim for energy.

2 more tips for night-time sleep aids:

-Decaf green tea extract capsule + 5htp/tryptophan.

-Tryptophan mixed with water and predigested collagen protein, and swallowed. Hat tip to Steve Fowkes on that one.

Magnesium will only help either of the above. In all cases, it’s like getting hit by a train. My favorite and most bioavailable magnesium supplement is putting ConcenTrace Mineral Drops (in a blue bottle available at WholeFoods) into empty gelcaps. Way better results than oxide, etc.

Love the Random Show! I wish I could get one of those Cricket Bars however, I live in Canada. I was curious, Kevin was talking about getting deep sleep for 3 to 4 hours a night. Is that average? I use a Basis Band for sleep tracking and I have never gotten more then 2 and a half hours, and I range usually from 1 and a half to 2 hours. this doesn’t change much whether I get 7 hours or 11 hours of sleep. I take magnesium citrate at night, pill form 1200mg, and I also do the Tbs of Almond Butter at night with celery (from 4HB). I also never wake up feeling completely refreshed and ready to go. Tips and tricks? Is my Deep Sleep normal? I have also tried the Honey and Vinegar concoction that was all the rage a few months ago…it didn’t work.

Totally knew Tim would say Anjelica. How could he not? She broke my 10-day streak. Her latest X-Art stuff is great….

Tim, I had 470 testosterone level per WellnessFX several months back. During that porn & masturbation-free 10-day period, my libido was insane. Unscientific experiment, but I legitimately felt amazing. Most energy, more focused, better mood.

Add competitive fighting (boxing, contact martial arts) to the no alcohol, no masturbation “detox” and you’ll be amazed at the testosterone increases and carryover to focus in all domains of life.

Its not porn per se, its the “release” under conditions of no object identification reciprocation.

Thankfully (!), sex with another person with orgasm and ejaculation has a dramatic effect on increasing testosterone.

The issue with masturbation + porn is the complete externalization of “other”.

This is no voodoo Bay Area new age bullshit.

There are some amazing life extension effects buried in this biology as it all relates to reproductive success. These are deeply wired programs that stem from pheromone detection.

Incidentally, we are starting to run some legit animal studies on this and the underlying neural circuit mechanisms. It all just validates what men and some have known for ages intuitively.

Credit where credit is due: Although “Tiny habits” might have been created by this UCSF guy Kevin mentions, he did not create the ideas behind them. The idea of regular, ridiculously small steps originates from W Edwards Deming and his work in the Training Within Industries (TWI) program in WWII days and possibly even earlier, though we have access to documentation in the form of the books Deming wrote in his lifetime. This philosophy of constant improvement was exported, along with the rest of TWI, to the ruin of Japan’s postwar economy where it took on the name kaizen, and helped rebuild some of the gigantic companies we know today, the poster child of which is Toyota. In the US it also became the cornerstone of what we now call Six Sigma

More recently this work came to the attention of Dr Robert Maurer of UCLA who used it extensively in his own practice, and then wrote a fittingly short book on using this technique for habit change called “One Small Step Can Change Your Life”, published in 2004. This book outlines the six techniques used in employing kaizen, one of which Darya is using, i.e. “Take small actions”.

Anyway food for thought.

Hi Tim — This is interesting & keep going with the podcasts, I really enjoyed this.

‘Porn’ seems to be a taboo subject that people just don’t want to talk about. I’m glad this has been addressed in such a carefree way. I often go on ‘Low-Porn Diets”, from week to week, and the result (for me) is increased will-power, productivity, physical strength and my face glows. I go on these LPD’s quite often and always notice the difference. Having said that, Anjelica is HOT!

I think you’ll ace it on the cricket protein bars!

@Tim,

You’ve recommended “Sláine” before, which is great. But dude… [Pedant warning], you are *still* mispronouncing his name. For linguaphile like yourself that’s too half-assed. The name is in Irish (which Americans tend to call “Gaelic” but that’s another rant).

In a discussion of Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel “Musashi” you’d never consider calling it “Moosawshey” or some other lazy anglicisation. I’m guessing you’d have more respect for the source culture and language. Why not with “Sláine”?

For an idea of how to say it see http://www.forvo.com/word/sl%C3%A1ine/#ga or this soso TTS synthesiser of one dialect pronunciation http://bit.ly/1j7NSb1

(The unusual sound after the “n” is what linguist call “velarisation”.)

Here’s hoping that next time you mention the great Mr Bisley and Sláine you’ll have go at a better pronunciation. 😉

P.S. I enjoyed the Joel Waitzkin podcast, a man committed to mastery in all its modes.

Really enjoyed watching this random show episode. I know polyrachis ant has been consumed for centuries in China as a superfood which they say is great for sexual health. Cricket bar is an interesting idea, not at all appetizing to western culture I would assume, but could be more marketable in China.

-Like you mentioned just about anything could be made into a flour, I wonder why why don’t see black and red bean candy bars the way cacao has, plus various other food items. Dried, floured, sweetened, flavored organically, and presented in an easily accessible candy bar, the food possibilities are endless. I would prefer soylent bars to liquid.

Good for you to report about your T levels. I think it’s a huge problem only the drug companies are talking about…(but not in a way that will make men healthier.)

In Dr Norman Diodge’s book on neuroscience “The Brain that Changes Itself” he covers this (and many other unrelated but huge brain-science advancements like fully recovering patients of stroke/paralysis, blind people who learn to see with their tongue, and other mind blowing stuff). He addresses this issue about hormones and pornography that change the brain, even down to the cells and DNA and the 3D brain scan prove it.

It falls in agreement with your findings. (I sense that he’s been sidelined for having a very unpopular findings and I wonder if you’ll get flack too. You won’t from me:) )

(Diodge’s book and work have won numerous awards. Check his wikipedia page. You should add this amazing book to you reading list—or book club list!).

Funny though, a slew of articles indicate the a man gets a 35% BOOST in Testosterone if he masturbates and watches porn. It is just a temporary boost they are tracking?

(Pharmaceutical and Porn industries are multi-billion dollar beasts that won’t take your findings happily and would probably love to bury your findings.) A huge spike in access to porn and a huge spike in males with Low T—I doubt it’s a coincidence. (Watch Fox News Channel or most sports channels, for about 4 minutes and you are guaranteed to see a (Erectile Dysfunction) Cialis type drug ad or Low T drug commercial. And maybe the first spokesman for ED, Bob Dole, should keep his hands where we can see them, huh? 😉

Good work, Tim.

For those interested in the “no-fap” challenge. I highly recommend the website yourbrainonporn.com. Which also deals with dopamine and other brain chemicals released when watching porn and why it’s basically not a good idea to do porn but why it has such a strong allure to the (visually oriented) male mind.

I found this one of the better shows actually. I’m not sure if the absence of alcohol has anything to do with it.

I would be quite interested for some mind-hacking tips/research from Tim. I’ve been doing meditation and studying a bit on the different effects different meditation techniques have on the mind, but I have to say it’s all still a bit vague…

I’d actually prefer to get protein from insects if it means eating less-processed foods. I can’t really understand how people consider that gross, but look at chickens, pigs and cows, let alone lobsters and crabs and fish, and think the animals are appetizing.

I saw an article a few months back about how Americans used to be freaked out by sushi, and how it’s huge. The article talks about a company hoping to make a similar transition with insects. Quick google search brought me to World Ento, but not sure if that’s the original company I read about or not.

Fermented Turmeric Tea is awesome! I spent about 3-4 weeks in Okinawa Japan and you see a lot of the older generation drinking it. When talking with people, I always asked their perspective on why people in Okinawa live so long and Fermented Turmeric Tea was at the top of the list. [Moderator: Link removed.]

Though it should be mentioned, and I wonder if Tim and Kevin noticed this as well, but the younger generation seems to be moving away from the traditional Okinawa diet and lifestyle. They eat a lot of meat/processed food/less vegetables, they don’t take part in traditional activities that their elders do, and they spend a lot of time isolating themselves via technology. I’m curious to see if within the next 50-80 years the Okinawa lifespan stays the same as the younger generation matures.

The marketcap of NXT is currently over 60 million dollars.

Hope you learned some new stuff!

I tried 250mg magnesium citrate at night to try and increase rem sleep % with a b vitamin (can’t remember which) to aid absorption. Effects: good rem sleep % (above average for me), felt sleepy when I was supposed to be getting up the next morning and muscles in legs aching the next day. Only mildly. Going to keep testing.

I should be clear: by rem sleep I mean ‘deep sleep’ as reported by MISFIT Shine.
